When David and I met, I was working at earthkam with my friend Ryan.
Ryan lived in a house with several roommate, including a guy named
Jack. I knew Ryan well, and got to know Jack through hanging out with
Ryan. Jack had gone to UCSD with David. David regular held card night
at his apartment on Friday nights. On Friday June 12, 1998, the last
Friday before I left Sandy Eggo for the summer, I was invited to tag
along. I had a wonderful time at cards night, met a bunch of great
people, and thought that this guy David was really great -- brilliant,
funny, attractive. I next saw David at another cards night after I
returned to San Diego in the fall. Surprise, surprise, he seemed just
as wonderful as he had in our one encounter in the spring. David and I
started to get to know each other better, but I had no idea if he was
as interested in me as I was in him. Then, in the middle of October, I
injured my knee rather badly. I was suddenly stuck on crutches and
many things I'd taken for granted (such as the ability to consume a
beverage anywhere in my apartment other than standing in the kitchen)
were either difficult or impossible. David was incredibly helpful and
supportive and encouraging. So I was thrilled when he offered to come
over and help me with a programming project I was working on. I was
even more thrilled and excited (and nervous!) when he rather
tentatively suggested that we go out beforehand to get some dinner. So
our first date was October 29th, 1998. After that, we quickly became
inseparable.
Twenty-three months later, he asked
me to marry him. And of course, I said yes.
